WHEN YOU LOOK BEYOND MY PAIN

Does my suffering makes me invisible to you, am I so repulsive that my humanity is lost upon you, are the tears in my eyes not evidence enough that I am hurting, hurting because my mind is shattering underneath the weight of so much inhumane treatment, treatment that denies me simple acts of kindness from those claiming moral superiority... people who walk around as if the perfection of them should be obvious and recognizable, but it is not, because it doesn't exist... or is it all in my mind that you see me different because of my pain, because I have fallen to such a level where empathy and compassion are non existent due to my confinement... or is it just your unwillingness to understand me because we chose different paths in life, and you feel yourself better than me, it must be, because why else would you deny me kindness, why else would you turn your back on my injustice, when justice should be extended against the beating heart of the universe...?

Can you see the candle burning in the midst of my darkness when you gaze upon me, can you feel the trembling of my heart beating heavily against the sleeve of your humanity as you walk past me, can you see the mental illness I suffer from as I battle post/present traumatic stress disorder as a result of spending thirty years in prison, is it apparent that I am in need of some measure of generosity due to this grave misfortune, or is your heart so cold and your mind so closed to my pain because you think I am deserving of it because of my imprisonment... what happened to forgiveness, transformation, redemption and restorative justice, do you believe that anyone is worthy of those attributes, or better yet, how would you feel if you knew the judge violated my constitutional rights by sentencing me to prison for a crime the jury found me not guilty of, or that I am remorseful for my actions, or that I use my time in prison mentoring others on how to be greater than their worst act, how would you feel about me then, would you feel like you've seen my inherent beauty and came to believe that I was worthy of your kindness, I hope so, because I am so much more when you look beyond my pain...
