I Remember

 I REMEMBER


Elijah McClain, George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Hadiya Pendleton, Sandra Bland, Clementa Pinckney, Michael Brown, Eric Garner, and so many other Black men and women that was killed by police. I continue to think of you, I continue to mourn you and I continue to miss you. Your murders haunt my days and nights because if this was a just and fair society, you would still be with us. But this society towards you has never been just, it has always been prejudiced. This society has always hated you in very large part because of the color of your skin and they have used that against you at every intricate part when it came to the creation of this country. Your lives were snatched before the totality of your greatness was realized, not because you were committing a crime, or in a war fighting for your country that doesn't love and treat you as you love and treat her, but because you were black and those police officers wanted to kill you for it.

They couldn't see that your blackness was not some disease to be eradicated, but loved, explored and appreciated. They couldn't see the beauty and value of your life because they were fixated on an ideal that spans hundreds of years and has existed within the very heartbeat of this country. In the fabric of their laws and structures, black people were not created to exist on the same level as them.  This kind of thinking is the reason why you were hunted and killed with impunity; why their systems and laws were designed to keep you at the bottom on every aspect of life, and why the prison industries has made billions of dollars off the backs of black and brown people. No, they could not see your beauty which is why your life meant nothing to them. But trust and believe that it means something to me and I refuse to let it die without fighting for the justice that should have protected your life. Since your death, I have increased the measure of my ideals so that you would never be lost in my world, your unknowingly sacrifice fuels me in a way that nothing else can. And I would like to honor and celebrate you for the remainder of my life because I hear your voices from the graves and I would like to share your sentiments with the people. I ask for your blessing and I promise to do right by you. #IREMEMBER

#WE CANNOT FORGET ABOUT THE INCARCERATED!!!

There are plethora of men and women who has been in prison longer than they should, men and women who has suffered severely by the hands of an unjust system that has an appetite so voracious, so barbaric and animalistic, that it even locks away children for the rest of their lives. This vehicle (mass incarceration) is one of the most profitable, dehumanizing, debilitating, and unjust institutions since slavery and the Jim Crow era. They (the architects of the prison system) care very little about rehabilitation, penitence, transformative justice, or humanity as long as their bottom line (profit margin, destruction of black and brown families and status quo) is maintained, they will continue locking minorities and people that do not look like them up at alarming and astronomical rates. WHERE IS THE JUSTICE AFTER 30 YEARS OF BEING IN PRISON ON ACQUITTED CHARGES

  A defendant is entitled to a presumption of innocence as to all charged conduct until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, and that presumption is supposed to do meaningful constitutional work as long as it applies. At least that's what courts tell the accused and the jury about how it works. We can think of no reason that a jury's finding the defendant not guilty of a charge undoes that guarantee. In fact, the jury's view that the state did not meet its burden of proof should cut the other way. --Bridget M.
